A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that can be used to create a perfect replacement tooth for patients who have suffered from tooth loss. Your natural tooth roots can fuse directly with your jawbone to provide necessary bone support. Each dental implant is crafted out of a special titanium alloy that can fuse directly to your bone the same way in a process called ‘osseointegration.’ Dental implants are the perfect tooth replacement option, because they are the only restorative option that restores both the tooth root and the tooth crown, and we are proud to offer them in all our Utah offices.
THE BENEFITS OF IMPLANT DENTISTRY:
- Health – When you lose a tooth, the jawbone underneath your gums can start to deteriorate. Dental implants restore jawbone support and can help lower jawbone deterioration for a healthier, happier, smile.
- Beauty – Each dental implant is restored with a custom-made dental crown that looks and feels like a natural tooth. A dental implant can restore your full smile. Dental implants also prevent bone loss and promote a more youthful face.
- Functionality – Our dental implants function just like a natural tooth. You’ll be able to enjoy all of the activities that you enjoyed before your tooth loss.
- Durability – Each tooth implant is crafted from a titanium alloy that is created to last. With proper care, your tooth implant can last a lifetime.

What is the Process?
Step One: Consultation
The initial consultation is essential to assess your oral health and determine if you’re a suitable candidate for dental implants. During the consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and take X-rays or scans of your jawbone to determine if there’s enough bone to support the implant. They will also discuss any underlying medical conditions that may affect the procedure and measure the space available for the implant.
Step Two: Implant Placement
Once the dentist has determined you’re a suitable candidate for dental implants, they will schedule an appointment for the implant placement. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to minimize pain and discomfort. Your dentist will make an incision into your gum, then drill a hole in your jawbone. Next, the implant is placed into the hole and tightly secured with a screw.
Step Three: Healing Process
After the implant placement, the bone surrounding the implant needs to grow and fuse with the implant in a process called osseointegration. This process can take several months, during which the site is covered with a temporary denture so you can eat and speak normally. During this phase, it’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly.
Step Four: Abutment Placement
Once the implant has fully fused with the bone, the dentist will place the abutment, a small connector piece, onto the implant. The abutment will serve as a base for the permanent crown or bridge. In some cases, placing the abutment at the time of implant placement is possible, eliminating the need for a separate surgery.
Step Five: Crown or Bridge Placement
After we place the abutment, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth to create a custom-made crown or bridge. Once ready, the crown or bridge is screwed or cemented onto the abutment. After placement, your dentist will check the fit and adjust the bite if necessary. You’ll be given post-operative care instructions and scheduled for a follow-up appointment to ensure everything is healing and functioning correctly.
